Buy Back Anfield

Your invitation to invest in Two Up Two Down and help us do things differently. For our community to take matters into our own hands and build a better future for ourselves: brick by brick, pound by pound.

Good quality, affordable housing is a global issue, but here in Anfield and Everton, we have a specific set of challenges. While many properties in our neighbourhood sit empty and in disrepair, we are losing family homes: the combination of low property values and our proximity to Liverpool Football Club means a developer can snap up a house and make more money from an Airbnb on match days than renting to a family.

We don’t accept this and are focused on showing a viable alternative – another way of doing things where we set our own bar.

We want to buy back Anfield. It starts with our first residential-only property on Thirlmere Road, but this isn’t just about one house.

It’s just the first of a number of empty properties that, in the community’s hands, can become warm, healthy and affordable homes, not just now, but for generations to come.

108 Thirlmere Road: Brick by brick

We have developed a relationship with a housing association which is looking to dispose of empty properties in the area, and we are buying the freehold of a three-bedroom house from them. The property has been empty for over twelve months.

Our aim is to refurbish it to high energy efficiency standards and bring it back into occupation as a secure, warm and affordable home. We’ll carry out remedial works to the existing retrofit measures that have caused damp and mould, all guided by a professional retrofit assessment.

Once refurbished, the house will be let at an affordable rent, to a household with a connection to our neighbourhood. As with everything we own, it will be held in trust for the community permanently.

The pipeline: House by house

108 Thirlmere Road is the first of a number of empty properties across our neighbourhood that, in the community’s hands, can become warm, healthy and affordable homes, not just now, but for generations to come. Three further properties are already under consideration with the Registered Provider, and we are in active discussions with a social lender about the finance to acquire and refurbish them.

Any amount raised above what 108 Thirlmere Road needs will support the purchase and development of these future projects. Our fundraising targets are built on exactly this basis: the minimum target delivers this first home; the optimum and maximum targets fund and accelerate the next ones.

We invite you to join us and contribute to a community-owned organisation.

Every pound is an investment in our community and a chance to be part of a wider shift in who holds power over the places we live, locally and nationally.

Invest with Community Shares

Community shares are a way for people to invest in organisations that serve a community purpose. They are withdrawable shares which can’t be sold or traded, unlike shares in a typical company – and can be returned to Two Up Two Down if you need to withdraw your investment.

All members have one vote, regardless of how many shares you hold. Like other investments, your shares will earn interest, credited to your share accounts, at up to 4% each year.

The minimum investment is £100, which can be invested in five monthly instalments of £20.The maximum amount one person can invest is £7,000.
