Summer Street Party: What happens when we come together?
One of our values at Two Up Two Down is community connection. We know there's something powerful about bringing people together and making space to meet, chat, make things and spend time with one another.
Moments like this help us feel part of something, like at our summer street party last Saturday. They show us that community isn't just the place we live, it's the people around us and created in time spent together.
This year, we co-hosted the event with Kitty's Laundrette, turning the street into a space where everyone was welcome. We set out long tables filled with flowers, hung up bunting, put up gazebos and filled the day with activities that invited people to stop by, pull up a chair and get involved.
Throughout the day there was live music, spoken word performances and ceilidh dancing, with plenty of people joining in. Liverpool Tool Library ran a collaborative game-building workshop, while others got creative making planters from recycled bottles. The Cosy Homes Club team also shared their recent work with Liverpool John Moores University, sparking conversations about retrofit, warm homes and community-led approaches to improving local housing.
One of the highlights was the first outing of the Travelling Power Station. Through an interactive game, people explored the difference between using energy from the national grid and generating renewable energy through solar power, discovering how producing more than you need can leave enough energy to share with others. It was a fun way to get people talking about energy and what a fairer, more sustainable future could look like.
Some of the best moments weren't planned. They came from the conversations happening around the tables, watching neighbours introduce themselves, children playing together, dancing and simply enjoying being in the same space. People commented on how bringing together a few simple things can create such a lovely atmosphere. There was so much care and effort from everyone involved in setting up, including the help and support we received from Kitty's Laundrette customers. While waiting for their washing, people pitched in to set out chairs, put up gazebos and hang bunting, helping to get the day off to an amazing start. We're so grateful to everyone who lent a hand.
The day also proved how much stronger we are when we work together. It was our first time co-hosting an event of this scale with Kitty's Laundrette, and it showed what local organisations can do when we share ideas, skills and resources. Together, we created something that was much greater than any one organisation could have done on its own.
We’re still riding high from the brilliant day we had together, and we’ll be continuing to create spaces to come together over the summer. Look out for more community events, our regular litter picks, and the Travelling Power Station on tour over the coming months!
If the Summer Street Party showed us anything, it's that community grows when people have the chance to spend time together. Sometimes all it takes is a few tables, some bunting and an invitation.
